Music review: Boot Camp Clik at Liv

On Monday at Liv, Boot Camp Clik made a compelling case for the all-time hip-hop supergroup title over the course of a nearly four-hour show celebrating 15 years of its label, Duck Down Records.

The rap world was different in 1995, and the assemblage of hoodies, Timberland boots and baggy jeans at the U Street club recaptured that era's hardcore, underground New York scene, down to the contact highs, spontaneous rhyme ciphers on the sidewalk and scarcity of female fans.

While nostalgia ran high, a strong opening set by Skyzoo, Duck Down's youngest member, proved that the iconic label is looking to the future. From conceptual tracks such as "Frisbees" to club and street banger "Speakers on Blast," Skyzoo quickly won over the few who weren't already familiar.

Lyrics descended in torrents via Sean Price's dense, menacing deadpan, Smif-N-Wessun's nimble line trading and Buckshot's explosive energy. Pharoahe Monch brings one of hip-hop's most complex flows to the camp, and the crowd roared its approval when he opened his set, dropping the line, "I'm Top 5 all time, alive or dead," before ripping through a collection of tongue-twisting highlights, including "Let's Go," "Desire" and "Clap." At the first strains of the "Godzilla" theme that it samples, Monch's biggest hit, "Simon Says," triggered a full-venue mosh pit.

Smif-N-Wessun kept the energy high over the marathon evening with a precise team delivery of "Let's Git It On" and "Stand Strong" from its classic album "Dah Shinin' " before the purest Boot Camp spitter, Sean Price, led a rap-along over a collection of his multilayered verses.

Playing the twitchy bantamweight to Sean P.'s hulking heavyweight, Buckshot bounced onto the stage almost three hours in and powered through Black Moon standards "Buck 'Em Down" and "I Got Cha Opin," then set off the night's second mosh pit with the whole Boot Camp performing the Jamaican dance hall-influenced smash "Sound Bwoy Bureill." Noting that the collective should finish the way it started, Buckshot then launched into the 1992 hit "Who Got da Props," which brought the show to a riotous close.
