Cachet and carry: the story of a handbag One

Hermes Handbag-wholesale from China
Hermes handbags are among the most sought-after and expensive in the world.

We visit the workshops in Paris to discover why.

It might make the most iconic handbags in the world, carried by everyone from Grace Kelly to Kate Moss, but at first sight the Hermes factory in Paris is far removed from the luxury stores in the world’s greatest cities. The production hub is a vast, modern glass building on an anonymous residential suburb of the French capital. Hermes might have been founded 173 years ago and be keen to trade on his heritage, but its factory looks more like a faceless office block.

Walking through the door marked with the Hermes logo – a traditional Parisian duc carriage, referencing its saddle-making past – I’m greeted by receptionists wearing the company’s signature printed silk scarves, knotted expertly at their necks.

Light floods in from the windows on to a life-size sculpture of a winged horse made of leather. Upstairs lurks the ateliers: one devoted to leather cutting, one to the production of bags and one to exotic skins and luggage. The workshops are unassuming rooms with pale walls, lots of natural light and workbenches.
